WHAT WE DO

For more than 30 years, NAESM has prioritized its mission to increase minority populations’ access to free HIV testing, sexually transmitted infections treatment, linkage to care, housing, behavioral and sexual health counseling, transportation, utility, food and clothing assistance and community outreach, and youth empowerment in the Atlanta Metropolitan area and throughout the state of Georgia.

HIV Testing

HIV is a virus that attacks cells that help the body fight infection, making a person more vulnerable to other infections and diseases. It is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a person with HIV, most commonly during unprotected sex (sex without a condom or HIV medicine to prevent or treat HIV), or through sharing injection drug equipment.

STI Screening

An STI/STD is an infection passed from one person to another person through sexual contact. An infection is when a bacteria, virus, or parasite enters and grows in the or on your body.

Behavioral Health

Whether it’s an issue pertaining to sexual health, behavioral health, or substance use, NAESM offers counseling and support. The organization’s licensed counselors assist in mediating problems with clients by helping them to find answers so that they live a better quality of life.

Housing Assistance

NAESM provides short term rental assistance and utility assistance for HIV positive individuals in need of such assistance, as well as assistance with deposits and first month’s rent for HIV positive individuals needing to move into a new home. NAESM will soon also provide emergency lodging assistance, and long-term rental subsidies (similar to Section 8 subsidies) to HIV positive individuals in need of that kind of support.

NAESM currently offers two (2) programs to assist clients:

1. PHP
(Permanent Housing Placement)

This program is an eligible supportive service activity under the HOPWA program – the goal of which is to help establish permanent residence when continues occupancy is expected.

2.STRMU
(Short-term Rent, Mortgage, Utility)

This assistance program is designed to be a short-term, needs-based intervention to prevent homelessness. Assistance is provided for a period of up to 21 weeks in any 52-week period. The amount of assistance varies per client depending on funds available, tenant needs and program guidelines.
